Theatre Artists’ Co-operative: The Independent Collective Series (TACTICS) invites artists, creators, collectives and companies to submit a proposal for a project in development to Ottawa’s curated and cooperative indie theatre series.

We are currently accepting proposals for projects in various stages of development for consideration in our 2021 Mainstage Series and Workshop Series (both Online and In Person).

TACTICS provides independent theatre creators and producers a development and presenting platform, affording artists the opportunity to take risks and dream big with their art. We aim to support creative artists in creative ways. In response to the realities and restrictions of the COVID-19 Pandemic, in the spring of 2020 we deferred our Mainstage Series and moved our regular Workshop Series of new plays to an online format, continuing to support development and collaboration by artists as they connected through the Zoom video platform. Having discovered the accessibility benefits of working online, as well as the ability to connect with collaborators outside the city, province and country, TACTICS has opted to keep an Online Workshop Series as part of our 2021 offerings to artists. Assuming we are able to do so safely and according to all public health guidelines, we are aiming to present our next Mainstage Series and In Person Workshop Series in April-June 2021.

TACTICS seeks to ensure Ottawa is a city for artistic development, where artists can respond to the needs of the story they have to tell and strive for artistic excellence. Further, TACTICS aims to program timely and relevant works that make the most of the liveness of theatre. We believe that to build and maintain an audience for live theatre, productions must create meaningful theatrical experiences that represent diverse voices and respond to the challenges of our world.

Continuing to respond to ever changing social realities during this time, TACTICS is dedicated to supporting Ottawa artists in creative ways. We encourage you to think about what kind of development opportunity would best help take your project from where it is now to its next stage.

In the Mainstage Series, TACTICS programs larger-scale works that exceed the production limitations of Fringe and other festivals requiring productions to share venues.

TACTICS will support selected artists in the Mainstage Series by providing:

  • a venue at the Arts Court Theatre
  • technical and promotional support
  • a guaranteed fee and/or payout of box office revenue
  • artistic feedback where appropriate
  • and (most importantly) a collaborative producing environment

In the Online Workshop Series, creators have the chance to develop new works in a supported workshop environment through the Zoom video platform. As part of the In-Person Workshops, creators have a chance to further the development of their project in a theatrical space, enabling actors to be on their feet, integrating aspects of design or choreography and experimenting with putting the text in a physical space.

TACTICS will support selected artists in the Workshop Series by providing:

  • the opportunity to workshop your script/project online for up to 25 hours, with a public reading on Zoom and live streaming to YouTube (Online Series)
  • OR  a physical venue in the Arts Court Theatre and with a public staged reading (In-Person Series)
  • a facilitated talk-back after the reading/performance
  • online technical support
  • promotional support
  • a guaranteed artist fee for each participant in the workshop
  • artistic feedback where appropriate
