2020 has brought all kinds of changes to us as individuals, as artists and as a community and no exception at TACTICS. Every transition brings mixed emotions–sadness as we approach an ending and joy as we welcome new beginnings. It is with sadness that we announce that TACTICS Artistic Director, Curator and Founder Bronwyn Steinberg is stepping down from her position with the company at the end of this year, but it is with joy that we congratulate her on her new position as Artistic Director of Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary!
Associate Artists and members of TACTICS’ steering committee Ludmylla Reis and Rebecca Benson take the helm as co-Artistic Directors and Curators of TACTICS at the start of 2021. Danielle Savoie will continue working with TACTICS as head of the company’s new Artists’ Advisory Committee and Louisa Haché joins our Board of Directors.
Leaving Ottawa and TACTICS is bittersweet. While I’m excited to begin my next chapter in Calgary, I know I’ll deeply miss my friends, colleagues and community here. I’m so proud of how TACTICS has grown in the past seven years, and I’ve been so inspired to see local artists dreaming big as they develop and present work in our series. Ludmylla and Rebecca have been brilliant Artistic Associates with TACTICS, and I can’t wait to see how the organization continues to grow and develop in their thoughtful care. And I’m so grateful to our talented new Board of Directors members who have joined the team to ensure that TACTICS will continue to serve Ottawa’s indie arts community long into the future. Calgary may be geographically far away, but if anything, this year has shown us all how much we can stay connected virtually. I will miss you all, but I’m only an email, phone call or zoom meeting away!
Hello Ottawa! After a couple of seasons working with TACTICS in the Steering Committee I’m extremely excited to get involved with you all more directly as I share this role with Rebecca. After the life-changing event we all lived this year, TACTICS ‘mandate to Dream Big with Your Art is the ideal motto we need to move forward. We are working through transitioning our recent incorporation, Covid exhaustion, safe reimagining of 2021 theatrical events amongst other things and we will share with you every bit of happy news as we can. In the meantime, I’m humbled by the chance to join TACTICS brilliant history achieved by Bronwyn’s vision, share with you my dreams for our city and excited to hear your dreams – big or small – as we move forward. Yes, we always move forward. With care, Ludmylla.
“When I came back to Ottawa over 4 years ago, I went for coffee with as many people in the theatre community as I could. I met so many generous people, and was excited by the strength of the independent theatre community. I went looking for the “hub”, the place where all these artists intersected, because I wanted to be part of that. TACTICS and its commitment to being a development ground – “good soil” – for growing the community, excited me and offered opportunities to “dream big”. I am honoured to be stepping up to share leadership with Ludmylla (another amazing artist) of this organization grown from a passion for collaboration, striving for excellence and offering a place for meeting, challenging, changing, and growing as artists in our community. Thanks so much to Bronwyn for her tireless work, dedication, generosity and belief.”
We hope to see you soon!
Wishing you health, hope and light in these shorter days! Hang in there, the Solstice is coming!
UPDATE: May 21, 2020
Given the realities and restrictions of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are pleased to announce that we have transferred our regular Workshop Series of new plays to an online format, continuing to support development and collaboration by artists as they connect through video platforms like Zoom. While we already have several projects in development, this shift means that we now have more funds available to pay out to local artists, and so we are looking for new projects!
UPDATE: March 23, 2020
We at TACTICS have been very excited to launch our spring 2020 programming this week. We have 8 projects with 8 brilliant teams of artists that we are supporting this season, with workshops and productions we’ve been planning for late April and late May. However, with the current Covid-19 situation, we have decided to delay our programming announcement until we have a better idea of how the series will move forward. Stay tuned, especially to our Facebook page, for announcements of our programming, as well as our new online version of the Green Room Series of engagement and development activities!
