& led by local staple Chelsey Fawcett this fall as part of our Green Room Series.

Join us for an unforgettable ten-week journey deep into the world of performing arts! This intensive program is designed for beginners and intermediate level performers who are looking to elevate their skillset to the next level. Over the course of ten weeks, students will immerse themselves in a comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of performance techniques. Dive deep into the art of scene study, where you will explore the nuances of character development and emotional depth. Discover the power of ensemble work as you collaborate with your peers to create captivating stories on stage. Master the art of monologues, honing your ability to command the attention of an audience with compelling solo performances. Unleash your inner warrior through the thrilling discipline of fight choreography, learning how to execute dynamic and safe combat sequences. Elevate your physicality and presence on stage through movement techniques, allowing your body to become a vessel for expression and storytelling. Embrace the hilarious world of clowning, uncovering the joy and artistry of physical comedy. Explore the integration of music and performance with musical expression, discovering how melodies and lyrics can enhance your storytelling abilities. And lastly, gain valuable insights into the world of auditions and learn best practices to help you stand out and succeed in this competitive industry. For the final week of your intensive, there will be a special panel of local artistic legends including,

Nina Lee Aquino (AD of National Arts Centre - English Theatre)

& Micah DeShazer (award winning actor, director & AD of TACTICS)

Here to support YOU and give 1-1 detailed feedback from each of us on your prepared mock audition. This will give you a chance to turn all your new tools learned over the 10 weeks into play and show off those gains!

Meet your Lead Instructor

Chelsey Fawcett (she/her) is an accomplished freelance director of theatre and film. She was nominated for Director of the Year from the Calgary Critter awards for her work on The Basement Boys (2014) Theatre BSMT, and won the Telus Storyhive competition for her work on Noonright (2015). Chelsey's extensive background in movement and dance creates a style of direction that creates dynamic storytelling. She uses a unique combination Chekhov, Grotowski when teaching and creating.  Chelsey recently graduated with her Master's in Directing from the University of Ottawa and is an active member of the Ottawa theatre community currently serving as the General Manager for the Ottawa Fringe Festival.

Class Descriptions

    • Introductions to the course work

    • Ensemble Building Exercises

    • Creation Play: Building & discovering how to live within the world of the stage

    • Working with selected monologues – Students will learn new approaches to text that will help them stand out.

    • Learn to be creative with how we color our text with our voices, and added physicality.

    • Dive deep into text analysis using Chekhov approaches.

    • Special emphasis on audition etiquette, and making bold monologue choices and making discoveries.

    • Basic knowledge and safety of hand to hand combat, commonly found in plays.

    • How to safely stage as an actor, how to rehearse, and invitation to directors for how to direct and work a scene.

    • Students will be working in duos or small groups, to analyze a scene, break it down, and build it back up using collaborative ways of incorporating team work, and learning how to bring our own artistic offers into the creative space.

    • Learn to add understanding of a Scene in relation to the plot and overall story arc of the play to incorporate greater depth through honest and brave emotional connection and implementing intentional nuance.

    • In this joyful, action-based, on-your-feet session, we will explore embodied practice, collaborative play, and improvisational movement strategies that support generative ensemble-based creation.

    • We will discover ways of recognizing our default habits as members of an ensemble, and cultivate practices that help us expand into new, imaginative possibilities.

    • Work on developing our capacity for collective sensory attunement, expanded attentional awareness, embodied imagination, non-verbal collaboration and embodied play will support our ability to generate creative possibility through relational action.

    • Learn to take the tools we’ve built over the last 8 weeks and build them into your monologues brought in from day one (or feel free to bring in a new piece you’ve discovered)

    • Work on your monologues in preparation for the mock audition panel during our final class.

    • Get in front of 4 professional artistic leaders in Ottawa theatre community and put your best foot forward.

    • Sit in on honest feedback sessions for each of your mock auditions and take note on what worked, what didn’t.

    • Do your monologue again, implementing the feedback given by each of our guest panelists.
